“Post-Primary Sector Computing and Coding Teacher Training Programmes”

How will we achieve this? – We use a 3 Phased Approach:
- Phase 1: Introduction to Computer Sciences and How to teach CS through Scratch.
- Phase 2: Introduction to HTML/CSS for Post Primary Teachers.
- Phase 3: Introduction to Python for Post Primary Teachers.
Upon completion of this 3 phased course all teachers will have over 120 hours teaching material and also have acquired the skills to deliver these modules. This is inline with the new Junior Cycle short coding course.
NB. Alignment.ie fully understands and backs all ASTI teachers, this course is a pure knowledge and material based course and not associated with any element of any educational department. Let’s be proactive and not reactive.

- 2.1 Discuss the basic concepts underlying the internet
- 2.2 Describe how data is transported on the internet and how computers communicate and cooperate through protocol
- 2.3 Explain how search engines deliver results
- 2.4 Build a website using HTML and CSS to showcase their learning
- 2.5 Explain how computers represent data using 1’s and 0’s

Title: TY Teacher Training – Introduction to Computer Science – Computing, Programming & ICT Skills for TY Students:
Aim:
Recent statistics and surveys have shown a very poor entry level into the field of Computer Science (CS), statistics also show high dropout rates for the students who do enter third level CS due to a basic lack of exposure. The aim of this course is to aid TY teachers introduce their student to CS and take the fear out of the unknown whilst giving their students an overview of the different elements of Computer Science, thus allowing the student to make an educated choice to consider CS as a progressive third level option.
Overview:
The goal of this Transition Year module is to introduce students to computing, coding, ICT Skill and the area of Computer Science in a fun and exciting way. This module was designed with this goal in mind and to ensure the fear is taken out of the unknown. At the end of the course students will have a good understanding of all the below elements whilst also learning how to plan and design projects. They will learn how to work together in teams and they will have the opportunity to present their work to their peers and teachers.

We have had an excellent uptake rate to date particularly for Transition Year Students. We offer discounts to schools who uptake 2 of these course. These course can be implemented within any term of the school year.
The skills demand for ICT talent is a global one. By 2015, it is estimated that there will be a shortage of up to 864,000 ICT professionals across the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA).
Ireland is likely to face an average increase in demand for high-level ICT skills of around 5% a year out to 2018 with the employment of ICT professionals anticipated to rise to just over 91,000.
