Teacher Computer Science Summer CPD

Our mission is to simply get all Primary and Post-Primary schools along with educational centres delivering computing and coding modules. Introducing and teaching students essential modern life skills. These courses are open and applicable to Primary and Post-Primary Teachers, Further Education Sector, NLN, YouthReach and YouthTrain Tutors.

3 Day Python Workshop for Teachers and Educators

Python is a widely used high-level programming language for general-purpose programming and is one of the most popular industry languages. This language is now the computer language used by all leading second and third level institutes. Due to teacher demand, we are running a 3-day workshop in Wexford just drop us an email for details.

Python is currently the most popular language for teaching introductory computer science courses at top-ranked U.S. Universities. Specifically, eight of the top 10 CS departments (80%), and 27 of the top 39 (69%) teach Python in introductory CS0 or CS1 courses.

Python is a general-purpose programming language created in the late 1980s and named after Monty Python, that’s used by thousands of people to do things from testing microchips at Intel to powering Instagram, to building video games with the PyGame library.

3 Day Course Layout

Strand 1 – Introduction to Computer Sciences and How to teach CS through Scratch

This one day course will give attendees the tools, skills and confidence to:

  1. Implement computing and coding in their classroom.
  2. For those that are already delivering computing and coding, this course will provide a full syllabus to allow teachers to expand their current skills portfolio.

What will be covered?

  • Presentation (Overview of Workshop)
  • Resources – YouTube for Education & Educational Website Usage.
  • How to keep your Laptops and PC clean and safe.
  • Anti-Virus SW, Updates, Disk Clean-up, What are the elements of your laptop.
  • Discuss ‘Short Course Coding – Specification for Junior Cycle’
  • Discuss how to align material with department specification requirements.
  • Programming with Scratch.
  • Computing – OS, HW, & SW. Computing and Coding through CS Unplugged (Paper Exercises).
  • JC Short Coding Course – Roadmap, resources and walk through.

Strand 2 – An Introduction to HTML & CSS Workshop

This one day course will give the attendees the tools, skills, and confidence to:

  1. Implement HTML & CSS in their classroom.
  2. For those that are already delivering HTML & CSS, this course will provide a full syllabus to allow teachers to expand their current skills portfolio.

What will be covered?

  • How to use Notepad++, Sublime Text 3 & Trinket.
  • Understanding how website work.
  • Understanding the difference between The Internet & The Web.
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP), what is it? what does it do?
  • Introduction to HTML & CSS.
  • Developing Web pages.
  • Syllabus navigation & exploration.
  • Exploring useful HTML & CSS websites.
  • JC Short Coding Course – Roadmap, resources and walk through.

New JC Short Coding Course Specifies – Phase 2 

  • 2.1 Discuss the basic concepts underlying the internet
  • 2.2 Describe how data is transported on the internet and how computers communicate and cooperate through a protocol
  • 2.3 Explain how search engines deliver results
  • 2.4 Build a website using HTML and CSS to showcase their learning
  • 2.5 Explain how computers represent data using 1’s and 0’s
  • 2.6 Investigate how drawings and photos are represented in computing devices
  • 2.7 Identify a topic or a challenge in computer science that inspires them
  • 2.8 Conduct research on the topic/challenge
  • 2.9 Present a proposal for discussion and reflect on feedback
  • 2.10  Convince their peers that an idea is worthwhile

Strand 3 – An introduction to Python Programming Post-Primary Workshop.

This one day course is to facilitate and give the attendees the tools, skills and confidence to:

  1. Implement Python in their classroom.
  2. For those that are already delivering Python, this course will provide a full syllabus to allow teachers to expand their current skills portfolio.
  3. Align teachers with training/resources and also provide a roadmap for the delivery of the Strand-3 of the JC Short Coding Course.

What will be covered?

  • How to use Python IDLE & Interface & Environment.
  • Using Turtle Graphics.
  • Understanding Variables & Numbers.
  • Loops. While, Repeat (For) & Nested.
  • Conditions & Boolean Logic.
  • Functions.

Costs:

Off-Site: This one day programme will cost €150 per attendee and will be payable through Eventbrite or by direct online payment.
